Prevention

ALPHA Behavioral Health Center Prevention Department works to educate and support individuals and communities to prevent the use and misuse of substances and the development of substance use disorders and other potential high-risk behaviors. Comprehensive and evidence-based programs are planned and implemented through a variety of settings including schools, churches, and community groups. Collaboration with other community partners such as law enforcement are key to addressing environmental factors as well.

Prevention programs consistently assess, and update program/strategies based upon accepted practice in the field, integrated into current research, evidenced-based, peer-reviewed scientific, health -related publications, current data/trends, and/or expert professional consensus. ALPHA utilizes the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework to define the essential traits of strategies and guide principles and actions steps in planning and building effective programs. ALPHA utilizes six main strategies of prevention: information dissemination, education, environmental, community collaboration, alternatives, and problem-identification and referral. Each activity within the strategies is evaluated for necessary updates or changes to maintain fidelity and ensure positive outcomes.
Prevention provides culturally competent programs and reaches the community in their own setting. Each program is personalized to meet the needs of the group or individuals being served. Funding for Prevention Programs are mainly supported with Federal Block Grant Funds, United Way allocations, and other specific grant opportunities. The majority of services are free of charge with the exception of the mandatory legal sanctioned services that require a nominal fee.
